Reframing the Family Narrative

“Reframing the Family Narrative” centrally focuses on the Lavrovs and Goorises, the latter from Belgium and the former from Russia. With her family’s photo archives, Sophia has transformed them into a curated multi-media installation, where she presents facets of her family’s collections along with reimagined albums and paintings of her family.

Artist Sophia Lavrov has taken it upon herself to archive her family's photo history, especially considering her position as the only child in her family. Documentation has also been critical as of late, considering her grandparents recently passed away in 2023. These archives have a growing potential of disappearing, and Sophia intends to bridge this seemingly distant past to her present, contemporary reality. What inspired Sophia the most was not seeing whole representations of her family through the family’s archives. With that, she feels focuses on the untold stories that do not find themselves in
pictures alone.
