Saint Sophia: The Divine Wisdom

This home-altar installation comprised of paintings and found objects blurs the home and religious institutions, the seperation often non-distinct. With the lines so blurred and religious practices so rote between home and church, I have created a new space for myself. A space where my vulnerability can be expressed and comforted. I use “selfie” self-portraits in place of biblical figures to create new icons. I have transformed the wise Saint Sophia into a new saint, one I can relate to. With these subverted Russian Orthodox icons, I satirize and challenge the hypocrisies of the Church, particularly around vanity and pride.
